Position Overview:

The Building Maintenance Custodian performs custodial work in and around City of Kitchener buildings.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Cleans all areas of facility (e.g., public and employee washrooms, showers, employee eating areas, foyers, and garages), using appropriate techniques and cleaners.
  • Contacts appropriate staff for plumbing, mechanical, and electrical problems.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and furniture such as oiling door-hinges, tightening screws, and replacing feet on chairs and tables.
  • Moves furniture and tables to different locations within the facility.
  • Sets up rooms for events and rentals. Arranges and sets up furniture, equipment, and related items. Resolves last minute changes and adjusts room set ups accordingly.
  • Performs interior and exterior clean-ups after large events.
  • Outside work includes washing glass, windows, and lights using ladders and lift, sweeping grounds and emptying garbage containers.
  • Shovels snow, including walkways and entrances up to three feet from building and salts walkways and entrances by hand up to three feet from the building.
  • Monitors inventory of cleaning supplies and materials (e.g., mops, toilet paper) to ensure appropriate levels of stock are maintained.
  • Orders cleaning supplies and materials by completing order forms.
  • Communicates daily with the public in order to provide directions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Locations and shifts:

City Hall: Sundy night to Wednesday night 9PM – 5AM; Thursday night 6PM – 2AM

Parking Garages: Civic, Duke & Ontario, Charles & Benton – Monday to Friday 6am – 2pm

 

Requirements:

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Recent and relevant custodial experience.
  • Valid MTO G class driver’s license in good standing in order to operate a City-owned vehicle.
  • Ability to operate floor scrubbers, power washers; ride on sweepers, burnishers, floor buffers, and steam cleaners.
  • Demonstrated ability to properly care for all types of floors with current chemicals and equipment as per industry standards.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing 10 to 25 kg daily (e.g., garbage, tables, chairs) and stand for prolonged periods of time. 
  • Ability to push, pull and lift objects (e.g., furniture) weighing less than 25 kg daily for sustained periods.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
